Double Vision: Seeing Patient Conditions and Narratives Simultaneously
journal article, photographs, graphic design
2021
To investigate the medical gaze as it relates to patient perspectives, I interviewed an individual with a chronic medical condition. Our conversation explored their relationship to health and their experience with their condition inside and outside medical contexts. I applied photo-elicitation research methodology to the interview, where the interviewee selected and described materials representative of their patient perspective. After transcribing the interview, I pulled a journal article that presented the interviewee's clinical diagnosis, symptoms, and treatments. I integrated the interviewee's materials and quotes into the journal article as a way for readers to experience the patient's condition and narrative simultaneously.
